The Hotchkiss H39, officially known as the Char léger modèle 1935 H modifié 1939, was a French light tank used during the early stages of World War II. Developed as an improved version of the earlier Hotchkiss H35, the H39 featured a more powerful engine, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 36 kilometers per hour, and thicker armor, enhancing its battlefield durability. Armed with a 37mm SA 38 gun and a coaxial 7.5mm machine gun, the H39 was designed to provide infantry support and engage enemy armor. Despite its advancements, the H39 struggled against the more heavily armored and better-armed German tanks during the Battle of France. After France's defeat in 1940, many captured H39s were used by German forces and various Axis allies throughout the war.
