The 38M Toldi was a Hungarian light tank used during World War II, named after the 14th-century Hungarian knight Miklós Toldi. Developed in the late 1930s, it was based on the Swedish Landsverk L-60, featuring a 20 mm Solothurn anti-tank gun and a 8 mm Gebauer machine gun. The Toldi was initially well-regarded for its speed and maneuverability, with a top speed of around 50 km/h, which was quite impressive for its time. However, its light armor made it vulnerable to the more powerful anti-tank weapons and heavier tanks it encountered as the war progressed. Despite its limitations, the Toldi saw extensive use on the Eastern Front, performing roles such as reconnaissance, infantry support, and anti-partisan operations. Its deployment highlighted the challenges faced by lighter armored vehicles in the rapidly evolving theaters of World War II combat.
